How to Join OCHS

The Oahu Company of Historical Swordsmanship is proudly an affiliate club of the HEMA Alliance, the largest HEMA federation in the Americas. They provide clubs with insurance for training and offer additional resources for club members. As such, every member of OCHS must also be a member of the HEMAA.

For Newcomers

Please look over our schedule and FAQs pages. Everyone is welcome to drop by and check us out. Classes and trainings are informal so showing up late is fine. If you can, please RSVP ahead of time here or on MeetUp.

If you want to pick up a sword and train with us you will need to sign up for HEMA Alliances Intro Class Coverage. It is a free, two-month trial membership that covers affiliate club training for those who aren’t sure they want to commit to anything. More information and registration for the Intro Class Coverage can be found here. Under club affiliation, write “Oahu Company of Historical Swordsmanship”. Once you have submitted the registration, you will be all set to train with us for 2 months.

“I love it and want to come back”

After those two months have lapsed, and you’ve decided you want to keep training with our group, you will need to purchase an in-network alliance membership, which runs $26 per year. More information and registration for the In-network Discounted Alliance Membership can be found here. It’s the same process as above, but you will have to renew it every year.

You will want to eventually purchase your own gear, so we provided a short reference list found here. However, we understand not everyone wants to spar with steel, or cannot afford the expensive gear needed to, so we want to make it clear members are welcome to train with plastic for as long as they like. The heavy gear requirements are intended for full-contact sparring.

Local Fees

OCHS does not charge any money to attend our practices or events. We function entirely off donations. However, members are required to join the HEMA Alliance.
